At the beginning of summer, I hit burnout. I was exhausted and overwhelmed. I constantly tried to fit too much into each day. In August, I finally gave myself the time and space to reflect. With the help of an amazing therapist, I realised something had to change.

My new mantra is: Stay in the slow lane. This doesn’t mean giving up on goals or being unproductive. It means consciously choosing to do things slower, more mindfully, and with more presence. Here are some slow living tips I tried that really worked for me:

  • Making my morning coffee slowly

  • Eating slowly and actually tasting my food

  • Driving slower

  • Taking slower dog walks

  • Sitting with a cuppa in the garden, soaking in the morning sunlight

  • Saying “no” more often to protect my time and space instead of cramming my days

And the magic? When you slow down, you don’t just feel calmer. You create space for more energy, joy, clarity, and even inspiration to flow in. I no longer feel exhausted all the time. Instead, I feel lighter, happier, and more present. I love this beautiful quote Dr. Chatterjee shared recently: “It is quite possible to leave your home for a walk in the early morning air and return a different person – beguiled, enchanted.”

That’s exactly how the slow lane feels.

4 Slow Living Tips to Help Stay Calm & Restored

mindful living advice

Here are four simple slow living practices I’ve been leaning on to stay grounded and energised:

1. 7/11 Breathing

Breathe deeply into your lower belly for a count of 7. Then gently exhale through your mouth for a count of 11. Repeat for a few rounds to reset your nervous system.

2. Check Your Thoughts

When life feels overwhelming, pause and ask yourself:

  • Does it really matter?

  • Is it really true?

These little check-ins create instant perspective.

3. Gratitude Journal

Each evening, write down:

  • 3 things you’re grateful for

  • 1 thing you know you did well

4. Healing Sound Therapy

I’ve been using the Evolutioner app, which offers guided healing music. A NASA study has shown that certain frequencies can promote healing and even reverse signs of aging. Their Healing Project uses soundwaves to expose the body to these frequencies — I find it incredibly restorative.

The Benefits of Slowing Down

Slowing down has given me back my energy, joy, and sense of balance. It’s a transformative experience that many can benefit from. When you take the time to slow down, you may discover new perspectives on life. You might find that the things you thought were urgent are not as pressing as they seemed.

Mindfulness in Everyday Life

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can enhance your overall well-being. It’s about being present in the moment. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee or taking a walk, focus on the experience. Notice the flavours, the sounds, and the sights around you. This practice can help reduce stress and increase your enjoyment of life.

Creating a Slow Living Environment

Consider creating a space that encourages slow living. This could be a cozy reading nook or a tranquil garden area. Surround yourself with items that bring you joy and peace. Declutter your environment to create a sense of calm. A serene space can significantly impact your mindset and help you embrace a slower pace.

Connecting with Nature

Spending time in nature is a powerful way to slow down. Go for a walk in the park or sit by a river. Nature has a unique ability to ground us and bring us back to the present moment. The sights and sounds of the natural world can be incredibly soothing. Make it a habit to connect with nature regularly.

The Importance of Saying No

Learning to say no is essential for maintaining balance in your life. It’s easy to overcommit and stretch yourself too thin. By saying no, you protect your time and energy. This allows you to focus on what truly matters to you. Remember, it’s okay to prioritise your well-being.

Conclusion: Your Journey to the Slow Lane

Maybe this week you could experiment with your own version of the slow lane. You might be surprised at how much life opens up when you do. Embrace the journey towards a slower, more mindful existence. The benefits are profound and can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.
